Choosing your meaningful object to draw
How to select objects:
1. Read the IB learner profile traits and choose one that describes you.
https://drive.google.com/#search/learner%20profile
2. Think about what object you could use to represent that trait. Example:
a figurine of a bird to symbolize PRINCIPLED because you believe it is
important to treat every living thing with respect.
3. Bring in your object so that you can draw it.
Here are guidelines to help you make sure your object will work for the drawing:
1. Objects must be 3-dimensional. Meaning they MUST have length, width and depth.
NO PHONES ALLOWED! NO EXCEPTIONS.
2. Objects CANNOT be people/animals or pictures/photographs of people/animals.
3. Objects CANNOT be pictures/photographs of people/animals in action poses. For example if you want to show balance you CANNOT bring in a photo of a ballerina.
4. Students are not allowed to draw from a drawing/print. Again objects must be 3-dimensional.
5. If these guideline are not followed your grade will be affected.
Things to do when you are ready to draw:
- Make sure you are using the drawing paper that is provided (not hole punched paper). The punched paper that we do bell work on is NOT drawing paper.
2. Make a contour line drawing of your object first.
3. After you have all the lines in your drawing you are ready to start adding values or shading. Remember to use a regular pencil to shade, NOT a mechanical pencil.

Negative Space Drawing
Negative space - the spaces around an object, the spaces where an object is not.
For this project, each table received a vase with leaves in it (like the one below)
Students were to do a drawing of the NEGATIVE SPACES and then fill in those negative space with either pencil or charcoal.
Here are some examples of negative space drawings that are similar to our assignment:

(Note: ALL students will be uploading photos of their projects on Artsonia. This helps me document students' finished projects so that I can grade them in one place. However, if your parent/guardian indicated on their permission form that they did NOT want their student's artwork published online, then Mrs. Sabin will be the only person who is able to view their artwork - it will not be made public.)

About Mrs. Sabin
I'm so pumped you are taking an art class at Sand Creek High School! A little bit about me (your teacher):
My full name is Sarah (Tietje) Sabin. I grew up on a farm in south Louisiana, but I moved to Colorado in 2006 after I received my Bachelor's degree in art history and dance from Tulane University in New Orleans. I went on to get my Masters of Arts in Teaching from Colorado College in 2009 and since then, I have taught art at Challenger Middle School, Cheyenne Mountain Junior High, Wasson High School, and Harrison High School. This is my second year teaching at Sand Creek High School.
I am also a dancer. I teach ballet and modern dance at Ormao Dance School. I also choreograph and perform professionally with Ormao Dance Company.

In addition to making art, dancing, and teaching, I also love to hike and be outdoors.
I look forward to getting to know you better throughout the school year!
